What do you like best about flying heavies?

What do you like least?

In my mind there are two "bests" about flying heavies. First, as a general rule you will see far more of the world (i.e. not just our deployed bases) travelling on a heavy. While many stops will consist of little more than dinner and sleep in a new country, every fourth or fifth stop seems to afford a chance to really explore a new place. Second, if you prefer city/suburban life to country life, I think the heavy bases are (on average) in better locations.

The "best" part is flying with a great crew to amazing places around the world. I have flown around the world on two different trips which were incredible. The "worst" part is being away from family and friends for months at a time. Currently our deployments are four months to less than desirable locations. But everyone in the military is deploying to these locations.

The thing I tell people about flying airlift is:

The best thing about flying airlift is that when anything happens in the world, you are there.

The worst thing about flying airlift is that when anything happens in the world, you are there.

I was there for the Panama invasion, I was in Red Square before the Soviet Union fell, and I was in Germany when the Berlin Wall fell. Amazing experiences. On the other hand, I've been in some places that were not so fun, but we won't mention that...
